I suggest looking for one with a tower case. UPDATE: due to the rise in prices of cryptocurrency, graphics card prices have now spiked up as well. Another option for a VR PC is to use cloud computing.
With this option, you use a powerful PC to run VR remotely. More information and demo, see here. Can a laptop run Oculus Link? It is possible for a reasonably-priced laptop to support Oculus Link.
You can then launch any game and play it as you normally would. Yes, absolutely. From there, you can launch Steam VR apps. Air Link is designed for Quest 2 but can also be used on Quest 1 if you sideload an unofficial app instructions below. The hardware you need is the same for Air Link or Virtual Desktop. Step 1 : Update Oculus desktop app to version 28 or later. This will reboot the Oculus app. Step 3 for Quest 1 only : sideload Air Link Connector.
Step 2: Make sure your Quest or Quest 2 is connected wirelessly to the router to which your PC is connected. Make sure that the Wi-Fi network is 5Ghz not 2. Click on the Air Link button to launch Air Link. Step 3 for Quest 1 only : Under Apps, click on the dropdown arrow on the right side and select Unknown Sources.
This will reveal sideloaded apps. An alternative to Air Link is Virtual Desktop. Compared to Air Link, Virtual Desktop is able to run on lower end PC hardware because it has more settings for decreasing the graphics quality. Note that as of February 25, , if you use Virtual Desktop 1. Step 1: Purchase and install Virtual Desktop 1. Do not purchase Virtual Desktop for Oculus Rift.
Make sure to install Steam VR first before you install virtual desktop streamer. Make sure you are on a 5Ghz network not 2. Under Settings, I suggest using the highest bitrate.
Just click on the game to launch it. Please note some games take a long while to load a few minutes. If you have a 5ghz router but your connection is less than mbps, try rebooting your headset and launching again. You can also use this same process to sideload other apps that are not on the Oculus store. Available here for Windows, Mac or Linux. Step 1: Install Sidequest.

Quest or Quest 2 also makes it possible to play desktop VR games wirelessly if you have a 5Ghz router.
The downside is that the graphics are less detailed unless you have a very powerful PC. On the other hand, if you want a more versatile headset or if you want a wireless VR experience for greater immersiveness at the expense of a little detail and motion that is a bit less smooth , then go for Quest 2.

And after the headset warms up, do you notice faint horizontal lines in the yellow sky of the dessert terrace environment? Thanks Jackie!
Have you tried switching environments or changing the direction of the environment hold down the oculus button? If there is a defect in a part of your screen, then I would guess you would see it in other environments too, and regardless of direction of the environment.
Best regards, Mic. I had a 64GB, swapped it out for a and immediately noticed the yellow lines on the desert terrace distant sky area as something I had never seen in my 64 GB one.
Not the White Earth Space Station one if you look at the distant buildings you can see the exact same effect and sure enough it is the Yellowish part if the image there too!! Also it disappears if you tilt your head so it is not in the actual screens at all times, but in the timing of the scanlines and or simply the color OR the LCDS ability to display a certain color?
At any rate is definitely a dynamic thing. It is not normal,. Perhaps that is a clue? Do you happen to have the GB as well? Thanks Mic for your reply. And I see the smearing in high contrast areas like white text on black background when the objects are not in the exact center of the lens. Maybe the lens sweet spot is a lot smaller than the Quest1. When you say smearing, you mean godrays? Anyway if it looks less sharp than your Quest 1 then yes probably you should exchange it.
And what about console gaming? The aging PlayStation VR is still fun if it's on sale and you have a PS4, mainly because there are loads more great VR game options for this device than you'd think. You might want to wait for the next-gen PSVR 2 which won't be here this year. Augmented reality headsets and mixed-reality headsets aren't ready for everyday use yet, so a solid VR headset is your best bet for escaping to other worlds in the meantime.
Read on to figure out which offers the best VR experience for you. We update this periodically, but note that prices are subject to change. Good: Self-contained and wireless; great touch controllers; comfortable design for gaming; doubles as PC VR headset. It's faster, smaller, cheaper and more comfortable to wear than the original Quest, but you have to log in to Facebook in order to use it.
The newest version has a storage bump to GB, fixing one of its biggest drawbacks there's no expandable storage. The Quest 2 reminds me of the Nintendo Switch for its versatility and fun, plus it takes mere seconds to start up and fits really well over glasses. The standalone VR headset has self-contained motion tracking and a full-motion six degrees of freedom aka 6DoF VR controller that is the same as the ones on the PC-required Oculus Rift , plus a surprisingly great high-resolution display and built-in speakers.
Apps are downloaded right to the standalone headset's onboard storage. But PC VR users have lots of other headset options. Read our Oculus Quest 2 review. For serious gamers or VR racing sim fans , this VR technology may be your best choice. The 2,x2,per-eye resolution and degree field of view are the best at this price range, and the lightweight, comfy headset also has fantastic drop-down speakers designed by Valve.
It's technically a Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality headset that prefers to launch into Microsoft's native Windows 10 VR ecosystem, but it bridges with Steam VR and works with those games and apps, too. Built-in camera-based room tracking is easier to set up than the Valve Index's external base stations, but is more prone to tracking errors.
The included controllers, based on Microsoft's VR controller design, feel clunkier than either the Oculus Touch controllers or Valve Index controllers. Also, the over-ear speakers are your only audio choice: there's no headphone jack. The Reverb G2, reviewed as a sim racing peripheral. Good : Amazing futuristic controllers; high-quality headset; works with Vive hardware.
Valve's headset might be the most interesting PC virtual reality experience this year, just for its fancy new controllers.
Valve's "knuckle" controllers are pressure-sensitive and can track all five fingers, making them almost like gloves. Not many apps make the most of them yet, but Valve's hardware is mix-and-match compatible with the HTC Vive, which also is built on the Steam VR platform.
Unlike most VR games, this one is designed to be played while stationary, standing, or sitting. Moss is available on all VR platforms. Superhot : Stylish, with a pulse-pounding soundtrack, Superhot plays like a cyberpunk action movie. You go from stage to stage, fighting faceless polygon men in slow motion. Time only moves when you move, so you can control the flow of the action and dance out of the way of bullets and projectiles. Superhot is available on all VR platforms. Beat Saber : There's not much to say about this game.
It's Guitar Hero with lightsabers, and I mean that in the best way. Beat Saber is a rhythm game, but instead of pushing buttons to match the notes, you slice them in half with glowing laser swords, and it's one hell of a workout.
It is available on all VR platforms. And no, it's not Half-Life 3. This game takes place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 , and it puts you in the shoes of Alyx Vance as she tries to keep the alien Combine from acquiring a superweapon. It plays a bit like a survival horror game, with scarce weapons and ammunition, but there are plenty of puzzles to keep things from being too monotonous.
Half-Life: Alyx is available on desktop-based VR platforms only. There are a few other options to know about when shopping for a VR headset and why they didn't make our top picks. One of the limiting factors for VR has always been space.
Where do you set it up? How much room do you need? Early on, you saw photos of room-scale virtual reality setups, or people pushing their furniture to the edge of their living room. But with headsets like the Oculus Quest 2, you can do VR in basically any room of your home. The key to making space for VR is finding somewhere comfy and familiar. For me, that's usually my living room. I just put the headset on and find an area where I can stretch my arms out without hitting anything, and go from there.
Sometimes it's helpful to lay out a yoga mat, so I can keep track of where I am in space. You could say that VR only requires as much space as you'd need for a yoga routine. Finding room for VR isn't so much about physical space as it is about finding how it fits into your life. For me, that's as a game console. I've tried keeping my VR headset plugged in beside my PC but that usually just means I forget about it and never use it.
I prefer hanging it off the back of my TV stand, plugged in, charging, and just as easy to hop in and out of as any other game console. In particular, the Oculus Quest 2 is a lot like the Nintendo Switch; a great home console, but also something you can easily take over to a friend's place and set up without having to wrestle with any wires.
