The lens has a detachable tripod foot like the F-Nikkor — although the third-party replacements for the foot of the F-Nikkor will not work with the Z-Nikkor.
Aperture ring: the multi-function control ring at the back of the Z-Nikkor can be assigned to operate the aperture this is the default , exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity — or simply switched off. The alternatives all have no aperture ring. Sealing: yes, a rubber grommet at the lens-mount plus further special weather-sealing throughout the construction, just like the other alternatives.
But that would have meant a complete optical redesign. Nikon seems to have taken their very successful design of the F-Nikkor and optimized it further — which may not be a bad decision.
Above from left to rigth: Nikon AF-S mm f2. Currently the Nikon Z mm f2. Above: Nikon Z mm f2. Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. Repeatability the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition of this lens at mm focal length is very good measured There is no focus variation whether the lens focuses from a closer distance or from infinity but I had cases of hunting.
At mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0. The zoom ring is located at the front of the lens and turns through 80 degrees the way Nikon users are used to. It has a 41mm wide rubber surface with a good grip. It can be operated with one finger but needs more force than the AF-S mm f2.
The lens control ring is only 8mm wide and is located close to the camera. It has no rubberized surface but moves very smooth and can easily be operated even with your pinky.
The focus ring is 21mm wide and moves smoothly. AF-operation produces a slight whir which can be heard from the outside when shooting photos. If you record video with the built-in microphone the AF-drive can produce a very slight noise.
Image stabilization or controlling the aperture from the control ring on the lens does not produce any noise. This is better than from the Nikon mm f2. So you need to re-focus when you change focal length! This is now the second optically stabilized Z-Nikkor I tested and I was curious whether the very good results from the Z mm VR would repeat. Fortunately the rings are close enough so that I can manage to get fingers on the focus ring if I need to i.
The older design more easily allowed both changing zoom position with your palm resting under that ring and not having to change hand position to subtly roll focus if you wanted to.
Of course, most shooters never get that nuanced. Most people will find this the bigger problem than hand position overall. Meanwhile, we get Lens Fn buttons arrayed between the rings. A very useful set of options, actually.
Bingo: Single Point, Group, point or your choice of a different three. Those buttons are handy, but I suspect that not a lot of shooters will get around to using them, let alone programming them. Does the slightly lighter weight come into play for handling?
Any reduction here is beneficial, as long as nothing else is lost. I found the new mm a little less fatiguing in long bouts of sports shooting than its predecessor. Focus speed : clearly a bit faster than the predecessor.
This new version of the lens snaps to focus noticeably faster, but not enough to make that the primary reason to buy it. The new version of the mm also seems to follow focus a little faster on random motion, though this is very difficult to put any specific value on. I quickly flipped from shooting the quarterback over the line of scrimmage to finding the receiver he was throwing to. VR is also now quieter. Again, this has more to do with showing a stable and settled view through the viewfinder than perhaps getting the final image more stabilized.
Sharpness : At virtually every focal length, the new mm is clearly sharper in the center of the frame than the older versions. Sometimes only a little, sometimes a lot. In a word: excellently. That might well lead to a more satisfying experience when shooting video. Alternatively get yourself a copy of my In Camera book or treat me to a coffee!
