BMW focused on making the E90 much more luxurious than the out-going E This was due to their customers repeatedly asking for more luxury. They simply wanted more luxury features for the dollar. Because we would be here until next year comparing little features of each car.
This of course is once again varies a huge amount based on milage, age, mods, seller motivation and other stuff. The E46 is obviously cheaper than the newer and more luxurious E The E90 is a much more luxurious vehicle that is way more desirable to the average person.
The money you save going with an E46 can be used towards things like a turbo kit or expensive suspension. It has become the standard that all other sports cars strive to become one day. For the money you get a time in 4.
Light weight panels, tuned suspension, and bigger brakes are also a part of the M3 package. The interior is nearly identical to the standard E The extra money goes basically to a better chassis, more horsepower, better suspension, and better brakes. The biggest difference between the E46 M3 and the E90 M3 is the power plant.
The E46 had a 3. But, the E90 M3 received a 4. This is where it gets a little more interesting. But what about the E90? The E90 3, lbs is significantly heavier than the E46 3, lbs. Its the only draw back to adding luxury features.
Does that extra weight slow the E90 down? Well not really. Chassis dynamics is a huge factor when it comes to circuit racing. This allows the suspension to properly do its job. More experienced drivers will probably prefer the E46 due to its weight advantage and cheaper parts. Well it really comes down to how much money your willing to spend on a car. Both the E46 and the E90 are excellent cars that can be used for the track, or for street.
I personally would rather have an E46, just because its way cheaper. Which one would you rather have? Let me know in the comments below!
All factors considered, E46 is a damn good car. E90 still needs to prove its worth. I kind of feel the e46 is aging very well and is closer to the ethic that pushed BMW sales.
Great write-up. I own a i e Again too early to tell. Still a thrill to get in the car and drive it. The list goes on. E46 pros: -if you drive a stick, having the window controls next to the shifter is most convenient. On the E90, I have to change hands on the steering wheel in order to activate the window switches on the door.
I'm fortunate I don't have to do this often. On the E90, the soundtrack is there but more distant and muted, a victim of further refinement of the 3 series. However, on the E90, the displays and controls are subtly angled even though they may not look like it.
E90 pros: Everything else! Amazing N52 engine. Aggresive stance and profile, especially with SP. More power, better fuel economy. Additional year of free maintenance for us Canucks. More rear legroom, similar to previous 5 E I'm sure I left out a few Been a 3 series fans since the e E90 cars generally have a higher spec, feels more upmarket even in basic i form. I like 2 new features in the e For a guy living in the tropical zone, the rear aircon vents are a boon.
Also like the ellipsoidal stock door mirrors, a break from standard boring rectangular ones. Cannot help feeling that this is a new bmw gimmick, just like the start stop button. I've noticed alot of new cars nowadays have dipped down door arm rest like the e90 eg Nissans. This is a negative in my eyes cos it's just isnt classy. The e46 has it all except a "new" design look, it looks better built and everything sorta compliment the other extremely well interiorly and exteriorily.
The e90 shines in the rear and sides department, the front is abit bland. I hate the fact that it came out with no side moulds side stripes on door for protection.
It has better clusters and the dials are on par. You can tell that BMW tried to reduce cost by doing some shortcuts in the design and what have you. But it's something minor given the 6 speed auto and run flat as standard i suppose I would choose the e90 sedan over the e46, but rather the e46 coupe over all. E90 for me. BMW in the UK are doing some good discounts at the moment for the E46 coupes, as production will cease at the end of the year so I am advised.
But there is no contest as the newer shape takes hold. The E46 is a cracking shape, but I believe has started to date when put next to the newer model.
I just think that the E90 looks and feels so much more modern than the E It is a step forward. However, I must say that I am a big fan of the Bangle styling - bear with me please!
The E36 obviously pre-Bangle was a shock on launch, but for a shape now 16 years old, it looks far more modern and can hold it's own against many newer shapes, not least those of the same era. At the end of the day, it is subjective, and let's not forget that they are all great cars, even if styling is not always to all tastes.
