Planned in by noted California architect Myron Hunt, the Oxy campus reflects a rich history; today, state-of-the-art science facilities are just down the path from beautifully preserved historic buildings.
Between the Academic Commons and the Johnson Student Center, the Academic Quad is the heart of campus, where trees provide shade for study, conversation, and contemplation. At lunchtime, members of student clubs promote their events or sell treats as part of fundraising efforts. Additionally, students have the opportunity to cultivate parcels of landscape surrounding their residence halls. In April , Bell Young Hall launched its herb and aromatherapy garden, which houses plants such as jasmine, thyme and daylilies. In , Oxy officially adopted a landscape master plan that emphasizes water stewardship and native plant species. The re-landscaping of the Hameetman Career Center patio that year showcases the guiding principles of the plan: an oak woodland frames terraces that slow the flow of water and allow it to percolate back into our groundwater system.
