How long are programmes available on iplayer

It takes time for broadcasters to make programmes available on demand after they go to air, particularly live broadcasts like the news for example. For programmes that can be made available for catch up on demand, the ingestion process typically takes 4 hours so you may not see it available on demand straight away.

Here you will find an overview of all available television programmes of BBC One, on a single page. On demand TV is the availability to watch 1 or more of the programs at a time that suites you. However, they are not exactly the same. Catch up TV is a subset of on demand TV.

Catch up TV is being able to watch a show at your time and place on your demand — but the show must have shown on the TV first. With the exception of BBC iPlayer content, you only need a licence for watching or recording content as it is broadcast on TV.

On-Demand subscription channels offer hundreds of free shows and movies only available On-Demand, so viewers incur charges simply for subscribing to the feature. On-Demand becomes similar to over-the-top services like Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video as it allows users to purchase additional movie or show content. Hi Gymbo Programmes in Catch-Up are available to all subscribers. On-demand or Boxsets require an extra subscription such as Sky Signature or Boxsets. This may be due to processing time, legal reasons, editorial reasons, and obtaining rights to air the particular show on BBC iPlayer.

Depending on the content and whether the show is live broadcasted or not, the availability is set. Sometimes, BBC iPlayer would have obtained rights for airing the program for only a set period of time like 30 days after it is initially broadcasted. When it comes to the time at which programs are available on BBC iPlayer, the duration depends on whether the program is live broadcasted, or pre-recorded. In the case of pre-recorded programs such as soaps, dramas, and documentaries, these shows are available immediately after their broadcast comes to end.

Rarely, it may take more time for the service to process the program and get it on to the BBC iPlayer platform. If the program was live broadcasted, or close to being live broadcasted, BBC iPlayer takes a little more time to process the programs.

This is because these programs need to be converted into a suitable format in order to be uploaded and publicly distributed on BBC iPlayer. There are some exceptions for over 75s, the visually impaired and care home residents, which can be viewed here.
