The original coating was swelling and chipping. It really spoiled the look of the car. I did not feel like changing to new rims and did get a quote from the paint-shop also. However, I decided to go the DIY route. Couple of YouTube videos later, I was ready to go. The Objective To stop the rims from corroding further and to make sure the rims look presentable.
The Before Here is a before picture, and trust me, this was the best of the 4 rims. The front portion of the rim was cleaned with the paint thinner to get out all the grime. The swollen paint was scraped off using a knife. The whole surface was sanded using sandpaper and made as smooth as possible. After this filler was applied of the deep grooves and craters to try and smooth them out. The filler was then sanded and I tried to match the contours of the rims.
The tyre was masked and we were ready to spray. The Paint I decided to go with 2 coats of Silver and 2 coats of Clear, the last coat being a as wet as I dared to go coat. The coats were made 15 minute apart and the final coat was given 2 hours to cure before carefully fitting onto the car. So here you go Note: I could have done a better job at the prep - the filling and re-sanding the surface before the paint.
They can be painted all one color or made extra spiffy with a two-tone scheme. Yes, alloy wheels can be polished. Choose your polish based what type of surface coating you already have on your alloy wheel.
If your alloy wheel is clear coated, it requires less aggressive polish. Others require more aggressive variations. Be careful, however, not to scratch or dull the finish. For best results, apply your polish with a specified polishing tool. This is a great way to enhance the look of your alloy wheels. Yes, alloy wheels can be chromed.
Remove the tires from the vehicle and from the rims. If you don't have the tools to remove the tires from the rims, take them to a local garage or tire center and see if they will take them off for a small fee. Scrub the wheels with a solution of warm water and mild soap. You can use a wire brush to remove dirt and grime. Rinse the wheels and make sure they dry completely.
Spray a light coating of primer paint over the wheel, using quick, back-and-forth sweeps. Apply the tire shine gel around the edge of the rim, being careful not to touch the clean rim.
This will protect the tire from overspray and make it easy to scrub the paint off. After the wheel is cleaned and prepped for painting, take your index cards and insert them between the tire and the wheel, covering any exposed tire. This protects the tire from overspray. Apply three coats of primer and paint, then voila!
